Republic of Ireland surrendered top spot in their UEFA Women’s EURO qualifying group after a 3-0 defeat to Germany in Essen.
Vera Pauw’s side were behind just eight minutes in, when Marina Hegering found space to firmly headed home a Dzsenifer Marozsán corner.
Louise Quinn headed well over the bar immediately after and Katie McCabe shot over the angle from distance but Germany struck twice before the break.
Marozsán hit a half-volley home as the defence stood off her and Lea Schuller’s effort went in off the post.
Alexandra Popp lashed well wide as the hosts began the second half strongly but chances were few as the score remained 3-0.
Ireland next have a crucial game away to Ukraine on 23 October, where a victory will see them secure at least second place in the group.
Spain net nine
Spain also took over pole position in their group, winning the evening fixture 9-0 away to Moldova, Mariona Caldentey with three of the goals.
