High-scoring Netherlands’ Olympics Women’s Tournament quarter-final opponents are a USA side who have failed to score in two of their three games.
Group G – Sweden through with 100% record, USA held by Australia
Sweden were on their way to maximum points in the group, with a 2-0 interval lead over New Zealand. Both goals came as goalkeeper Erin Nayler was beaten to the ball by a glancing header, first by new Everton signing Anna Anvegard, the second Madelen Janogy. Jennifer Falk made a double save for Sweden and later denied Hannah Wilkinson a goal on her 100th appearance for the Football Ferns. Emma Kullberg struck the crossbar as the Swedes went in search of more goals.
The USA progressed as the group runners-up but drew a blank for the second time in the competition, in a goalless draw with Australia.
Group E – Japan progress but face Sweden next
Great Britain won the group after Caroline Weir replied to Adriana Leon’s opener late on.
Japan made it through in third place at the expense of Chile, as Mina Tanaka got the game’s only goal with 13 minutes remaining.
Group F – Netherlands net eight, ten-player Zambia restrict Brazil
Netherlands made it 21 goals in three group games, as China were thrashed 8-2. Shanice van de Sanden’s opener was cancelled out by Shanshan Wang but Lineth Beerensteyn, Vivianne Miedema and Lieke Martens each bagged a brace, Victoria Pelova a single, with Wang Yenwen getting the second for the Steel Roses.
Brazil edged Zambia just 1-0 despite the Africans losing Lushomo Mweemba to 13th-minute red card. Andressa Alves made the player-advantage count six minutes later but Zambia kept Brazil at bay thereafter.
