Tottenham Hotspur have strengthened their back line with the signing of 23-year-old centre-half Anne Meiwald from FA Women’s Championship rivals London Bees.

Previously also on the books of Arsenal and Chelsea, the German-born defender has experience of playing in the Champions League.

Meiwald told tottenhamhotspur.com: “The team showed last season that they could compete in the Women’s Super League 2 and hopefully this season we’ll compete with the best at the top end of the Championship.

“What the club has done well is keep the faith in the players who have brought them up. They’ve also seen where they needed to improve and the players here believe we can do that.”

Manager Karen Hills said: “Anne is only young but she’s experienced and has played at the top level. She’s had that exposure to what is needed at this level.

“We’ve seen already that she has the desire, the willingness to work hard and the passion we require. I believe she’ll help bring the best out of our defence. She has a very good footballing CV, a nice manner, great attitude and she’s hungry to succeed.”
