Goals from Jane Ross and Lisa Evans gave Scotland a 2-0 victory over New Zealand, in the first of a friendly double-header played at Pinatar in Spain.

Shelley Kerr’s side might have scored in the first minute but Sophie Howard put the ball over the bar from close range.

Erin Cuthbert and Christie Murray both had powerful shots saved by Erin Nayler but on 34 minutes Jane Ross opened the scoring on the rebound, after her first effort was parried.

Five minutes before the break, Claire Emslie was close to doubling the lead but her strike produced a fine stop from Nayler.

After the interval, Evans nodded just wide from Cuthbert’s cross and Caroline Weir rattled the crossbar from distance.

The Football Ferns were then also denied by the bar when Anna Green connected with an Olivia Chance corner.

Lee Alexander prevented Amber Hearn equalising before Cuthbert won possession and set up Evans to net the second goal a dozen minutes from the end.

Scotland and New Zealand meet again on Tuesday.
