With all domestic matches suspended until at least 30 April and the 2019-20 Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League extended indefinitely, we explore the current state of play.

Swansea City had been closing in on the WPWL title after ten wins and one draw, plus just one goal conceded. Defending champions Cardiff Met were four points behind in second and with only three games to go each.

Cardiff City FC were a further five points back with a game in hand in a league that had been reduced to eight teams with the withdrawal of North Wales pair Llandudno and Rhyl.

Cascade had only dropped a couple of points in a dozen matches as they led the Welsh League table by six points from Barry Town United, who did have one game in hand. Caldicot Town would have been in a similar position if they had won their two games in hand on Barry. Splott Albion occupied the one relegation place just goal-difference behind Willows.

Cwmbran Celtic would have clinched the South Wales Division 1 with a victory in their final fixture, to move out of the reach of Pontypridd Town. Three unbeaten sides were contesting the Division 2 top spot, Afan Lido having a point more than AFC Porth from a game more while Cardiff Bluebirds were able to catch both due to their games in hand.

Llanfair United still held a 100% record at the top of the North Wales League Division 1 even though all but one game was away. Bethel sat second in the table with two points dropped, while Wrexham were six points adrift at the bottom. Amlwch Town enjoyed a seven-point advantage over NFA Academy in Division 2, although they could be caught by Connah’s Quay Nomads.

In pole position in West Wales was Pontarddulais but Swansea University had four games with which to take three points to catch them and only a single goal let in over nine matches.

Aberystwyth Town Development were leading the Ceredigion League from second-placed Tregaron Turfs.

Emergency Fund

Emergency funding of £400,000 for not-for-profit community sport in Wales has been confirmed by Sport Wales and Welsh Government.

The Emergency Relief Fund is targeted at clubs who are already facing significant challenges after a difficult few weeks and who are likely to need immediate financial support over the coming weeks (up to 30 June 2020) if they are to remain an important part of their communities in the future. Each eligible club will be able to apply for a maximum of £5,000.
