Manchester United extended their lead in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Aston Villa.
Ella Toone and Lauren James had a couple of efforts each in the first half but it was Leah Galton who opened the scoring, following a good first touch and turn from Hayley Ladd’s pass.
Villa’s Shania Hayles forced a save from Mary Earps and fired another opportunity high and wide.
Both crossbars were struck moments apart in the second period, the ball ricocheting off Hayles onto the frame of the visitors’ goal after Earps Parried an Emma Follis effort, James then rattling the woodwork for United.
Casey Stoney’s side were rather wasteful with the many chances they created, Jane Ross closest to a second goal but denied on the line until – with a minute remaining – Toone caught Lisa Weiss well off her line to make sure of all three points.
