Charlton Athletic moved level on points with Barclays Women’s Championship leaders Sunderland after a 1-0 Friday evening win at Lewes, where each side were reduced to ten players.
In front of a 987-strong crowd at the Dripping Pan, Kayleigh Green went close early on for the visitors and at the end of the first 45, Carla Humphrey’s shot was well saved by Sophie Whitehouse.
In-between there had been a goalmouth scramble following a Lewes free kick, Sian Rogers managing finally gather the ball after a chance for Hollie Olding.
In the 63rd minute there were two dismissals, Charlton’s Kate Longhurst and Lewes’s Shauna Vassell were sent off.
The only goal was a late one, as Green converted an 88th-minute penalty, that lifted the Addicks above Southampton and kept Lewes at the foot of the table – also on goal-difference.
