Team GB suffered a 3-2 loss to Spain in the Women’s Football final at the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games in Doha, Qatar.
Molly Clark opened the scoring but Spain took control with three goals in the first of three periods. Rebecca Barron reduced the arrears with 9 minutes left and Team GB narrowly missed out on an equaliser from a followed up shot by Gemma Hillier.
An emotional Captain Sarah Kempson (Littlehampton) told teamgb.com; “We had two of the best teams in the world competing on the biggest stage tonight and I am super proud of both team’s today for putting a great show.
“I have played all around the world and whist I hope I continue to get those opportunities, I hope that girls watching have been inspired to come and give it a go, and one day take my spot and in ten year’s time show me how it is done.”
Team GB had beaten Brazil 6-5 in a thrilling semi-final after trailing 2-0. Wendy Martin hit a hat-trick before being sent off, Kempson got a last-minute winner as Hannah Haughton then made a stunning save from a free-kick.
All three group games were won by Team GB, with Paraguay edged 5-4, USA downed 5-2 and Russia beaten 4-1.
