Sarina Wiegman was named the winner of the Johan Cruyff Trophy for the best women’s coach in the world at the 2025 Ballon d’Or.

It recognises her achievement in leading England to their second consecutive European Championship triumph, becoming the nation’s first senior team to win a major tournament overseas.

It was her third Euros win in a row, having won the tournament in 2017 with the Netherlands. It also marked her fifth major tournament final in a row, making her the first coach in the men’s or women’s game to reach that streak.

Wiegman, in quotes reported by the BBC, said during her acceptance speech: “What an honour to get this award after a very special summer, and even more of an insane tournament we had at the Euros in Switzerland.

“First of all I would like to thank the players, the staff, the FA and my family for the hard work, the trust and the unconditional support. Without you I would not be standing here.

“The women’s game has grown so far we have broken records. I would also like to thank Switzerland for organising the Euros because it was absolutely insane.

“This is not just a personal honour – I see it as a recognition of the women’s game, of our journey and where we have come so far.”

She also mentioned the increased popularity and media spotlight on the women’s game, and called on all those involved to work against discrimination and prejudice, saying: “With that recognition we have to take responsibility and try to keep our identity – being authentic, being inclusive, a place where everyone belongs. I hope we will keep fighting together against misogyny and racism. Sport should always unite and never divide.”

Wiegman’s rivals in the running for Johan Cruyff Trophy

Wiegman’s award was presented by former England men’s coach Fabio Capello – who mispronounced her name as “Sabrina”.

She was nominated in a category with Chelsea’s Sonia Bompastor, who led her side to the domestic treble, and Renee Slegers of Arsenal, whose team won the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Also nominated were Arthur Elias, who led Brazil to victory in the Copa America, and Justine Madugu, whose Nigeria side won the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hannah Hampton wins accolade

Hannah Hampton, the England goalkeeper whose penalty shoot-out heroics played a major role in this summer’s victory, was named the first-ever winner of the women’s Lev Yachine Trophy.
