Vitality Women’s FA Cup 3rd Rd: Nearly 1,400 see Newcastle bow out to Wolves

Just seven of the 20 Vitality Women’s FA Cup 3rd Round ties survived the weather, including Wolves’ win in front of almost 1,400 at Newcastle United.

Wolves went through 5-1 aided by a Beth Merrick brace at Newcastle, for whom Kacie Elson had equalised and Beth Guy had a penalty saved by Bec Thomas.

Bristol City avenged last season’s exit to Southampton by sinking the Saints 2-0. Shania Hayles put them ahead and Emily Syme buried a second-half free kick.

Oxford United progressed past Plymouth Argyle, Sarah King and Leah Burridge’s first-half goals followed by the third from Daisy McLachlan.

Hashtag also won 3-0 against Actonians with all the goals by Sammy Rowland.

Coventry United had to twice come from behind before seeing off fourth-tier Stockport County. Kenzie Bentley got both for County, Mary McAteer’s brace helped send the Championship side through.

Bournemouth Sports held hosts Cardiff City Ladies to a goalless first half but the favourites scored five after the break, with a couple from Cori Wills.

Ipswich Town put seven past Portishead Town, Anna Grey getting two of their goals.

The draw for the fourth round will be broadcast live on The FA Player from 7pm on Monday.
