While the Netherlands and USA needed penalties to reach the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup semi-finals, Japan won after extra-time and North Korea in 90 minutes.
Brazil 0-1 North Korea
Netherlands 2-2 (aet) Colombia (Netherlands won 3-0 on pens)
Japan 1-0 (aet) Spain
USA 2-2 (aet) Germany (USA won 3-1 on pens)
Germany agonisingly missed out after letting slip a 2-0 lead in stoppage time. Cora Zicai’s opener was added to after the 90 minutes by Loreen Bender, only for the USA to force extra-time with Jordynn Dudley and Allyson Sentnor eight and nine minutes into stoppages respectively. With no further goals it was down to a shoot-out in which Germany missed three in a row.
The Dutch twice came from behind against hosts Colombia, Fleur Stoit and Inske Weiman cancelling out goals from Karla Torres. No breakthrough was to follow in the extra half-hour, penalties saw Netherlands score three and Colombia fail from as many which left the Dutch out of reach.
2022 runners-up Japan eliminated holders Spain with a single goal in extra-time, Hiromi Yoneda’s 102nd-minute goal proving decisive.
North Korea knocked out Brazil also by the only goal of the game, Chae Un-yong netting early in the second half.
