Both Great Britain and Ireland are left to complete in the play-offs for the lower places at the World University Games, after finishing bottom of their respective groups.
USA won Group A after edging bottom of the table Argentina 1-0 with a 30th-minute Emily Bruder effort.
South Korea took second place despite hosts Chinese Taipei equalising in the last minute. Hwa Yeon Son scored in the first half, with Hsiu Chin Yu equalising.
Mexico defeated Canada 2-0 in the Group B decider to finish top by one point. Susana Munoz Soto and Daniela Solis scored in the first 33 minutes as the Mexicans took top spot and left Ireland last in the table.
Brazil defeated Japan 3-1 to take top spot in Group C, Bianca Gomes de Lima and Diany Martins put them two up in 15 minutes, Carla Pereira Nunes got the third, with Chihiro Yamaguchi netting a late consolation.
Great Britain and Russia were goalless at half-time in their Group D game but Margarita Chernomyrdina broke the deadlock. GB levelled through Georgia Evans only for Ekaterina Pantiukhina to win it for Russia, who finish in pole position ahead of South Africa.
