Republic of Ireland edged Hungary for a fifth straight win in UEFA Women’s Nations League Group B1, Northern Ireland won in Albania to go second.
The Republic of Ireland had already sealed promotion but did their neighbours a favour, who took the chance to leapfrog Hungary in the table.
Courtney Brosnan saved from Evelin Fenyvesi early on and did well to also deny Henrietta Csiszar.
A Heather Payne cross on 65 minutes caused chaos in the Hungarian six-yard box, Reka Szocs spilling it and Csiszar’s attempted clearance ending up in her own net.
Denise O’Sullivan forced a fine save from the boot of Szocs, Caitlin Hayes saw her header was cleared off the line by Hanna Nemeth.
Simone Magill scored twice as Northern Ireland ran out 4-0 winners over Albania.
She opened the scoring just before the break when following up Marissa Callaghan’s blocked effort, heading home to double the lead from a Danielle Maxwell cross just a minute after the restart.
Maxwell found the net herself before the hour mark via a Lauren Wade delivery, Megan Bell adding a late fourth from Demi Vance’s corner.
Northern Ireland host Republic of Ireland at Windsor Park on Tuesday 5 December, in the final round of group games.
