Scotland went down 2-0 to Spain in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier in front of a record 7,804 crowd at Hampden Park.

Caroline Weir threatened in the opening seconds but Jennifer Hermoso forced a save from Lee Alexander before converting a 14th minute penalty, after Nicola Docherty brought down Alexia Putellas.

The flag went up for offside when Putellas headed home, Scotland were to be similarly frustrated as Erin Cuthbert sent Martha Thomas latched through to rounded the keeper.

Cuthbert’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected narrowly wide, before Hermoso played a one-two with Putellas and fired home from a tight angle.

Scotland remain second in the group, one point ahead of Hungary.
