Queens Park Rangers Ladies FC will now officially be known as Queens Park Rangers Women FC.
The change, which was ratified by The FA on Monday (11th June), sees a return to the club’s original name. QPR Ladies FC was formed in May 2001 following a successful merger of two long-running and well-established women’s teams; Wembley Mill Hill and QPR Women FC.
Rangers say they have now decided to revert to represent a modern view on language and equality, whilst being in keeping with the way the governing bodies, supporters, squad and management regard the women’s game.
“There are numerous reasons why we’ve decided to change our name,” QPR Women FC manager, Martino Chevannes, told www.qpr.co.uk.
“The outdated terminology of ‘ladies’ teams, the views of our players and committee, and the positive ways in which the term ‘women’ is now perceived both in sport and society.
“If you look at other sports, females are referred to as women. Everything in the female game now is referred to as the women’s too – The FA Women’s Super League, The FA Women’s Premier League and The Women’s FA Cup for example. It is only right that the name of the teams that take part in these competitions reflect the description of the league name.”
Kevin McGrath, chairman of QPR Women FC, added: “We are very excited about the future of QPR Women FC.
“We hope the name change reflects the very exciting movement with The FA and women’s football.”
Queens Park Rangers Ladies Reserves will also now be known as Queens Park Rangers Women Reserves.
