The 26-year-old defender becomes the Gunners third signing this summer from Bayern Munich, with whom she won two Frauen Bundesliga titles in a six-year spell.

Maier has been capped on more than 70 occasions for Germany, helping them to win gold at the 2016 Olympics and the UEFA Women’s Championships three times.

She told www.arsenal.com. “It has always been a dream of mine to play abroad and I think that the Women’s Super League has developed in an amazing way for the last few years, so for me it’s a great honour to join Arsenal.”

“Leoni is a talented defender,” added manager Joe Montemurro. “She has a great understanding of the game, and the experience of playing at the most competitive standard to match it.”
