Laura Coombs nets two in the FA Cup for ‘goal hungry’ Manchester City

Manchester United - Barclays FA Womens Super League - Etihad Stadium

Laura Coombs has continued her goalscoring form for Manchester City with two goals against Bournemouth in the women’s FA Cup.

The midfielder took her season tally to five goals with a brace in the FA Cup fourth round.

Laura Coombs continues good form

Although she doesn’t get many starts for Manchester City, Laura Coombs has shown she’s a valuable member of the squad when she plays.

Coombs was on target again over the weekend as City thrashed Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

Speaking after the game, the English veteran credited her relentless teammates.

“This team is definitely goal hungry,” she stated. “Everyone wants to get on the scoresheet even past the 90th minute and that’s a sign of a really good team, we never give up. We just want to get the biggest results every week.”

Coombs was quick to thank summer signing Grace Clinton, who played her role in the 34-year-old’s first goal.

“I think it was Grace [Clinton], Blinky, a few one-twos and then I found the space and thought ‘I’m going to leather it’, it was nice.

“[For the second] I wasn’t sure if Bunny was going to shoot but I was thinking I’ll stand in the right position just in case! I’m really happy with it.

“I was really trying [for a third], but I’m happy to get two goals at least.”

Coombs has featured in nine games so far this season. The former Arsenal youth player has predominantly featured off the bench for City, but in cup competitions she has proved to be an impressive squad player.

Will Coombs play a role in City’s title charge?

While she has impressed this season in both cups, Laura Coombs is unlikely to break into City’s WSL side.

The league leaders are flying at the top of the table and it will take an almighty effort from Chelsea to stop the champions elect.

Coombs has played in five WSL games so far this year but all of her appearances have been off the bench.

Grace Clinton, Laura Blindkilde and Yui Hasegawa are all above Coombs in the City pecking order, but the experienced midfielder is happy being a squad player for her club.

The Cityzens have another cup clash coming up next, as they face Chelsea midweek in the League Cup semi-final.

After an impressive brace against the Cherries over the weekend there is a good chance Laura Coombs could earn back to back starts.
