#FIFAWWC2019 Day 7: Australia come from two down to beat Brazil

Marta makes the record books but the Matildas become only the second side to win at the WWC after trailing by two goals, while elsewhere China edged South Africa 1-0.

Matildas in command after Marta exit

Brazil’s 2-0 lead over Australia was halved by the break, after which veterans Formiga and Marta were withdrawn and the Matildas took control.

It was a Marta penalty and a fine header from Cristiane that should have set Brazil up for another three points but Caitlin Foord replied to start the fightback.

Chloe Logarzo’s cross-shot found its way into the corner of the net for the leveller and a controversial VAR decision decided the match, Monica heading into her own net while Sam Kerr was in an offside position.

While Marta became the first player to score in five different WWC’s and joint top scorer at any World Cup (15, together with Germany’s Miroslav Klose), her achievements were marred by a first group-stage defeat in 24 years for Brazil.

GROUP B

South Africa look to be on their way out after a single-goal defeat to China, a result which sends Germany into the knockout stages.

Over 20,000 at the Parc des Princes saw Li Ying connect with Zhang Rui’s delivery 5 minutes before half time.

There were very few shots on goal in the whole game and Thembi Kgatlana’s effort into the side-netting was as close as Banyana Banyana got, while Wang Shanshan’s header came down off the crossbar for the Steel Roses.
