Brazil and Spain both had narrow 1-0 wins at the FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup quarter-finals in Costa Rica.
Spain edged Mexico as the tournament’s leading goalscorer Inma Gabarro found the net after 25 minutes, in front on nearly 5,000 at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica.
Cheryl Foster refereed the second tie on Saturday, in which Brazil’s victory over Colombia came thanks to Tarciane’s 26th-minute penalty.
Spain will now meet the winner of Nigeria versus the Netherlands and Brazil face Japan or France in Thursday’s semi-finals, with the remaining last-eight ties being played later today, Sunday 21 August.
