FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Round of 16 ties confirmed

Japan and North Korea won the last group deciders ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup knockout stages.

Group E: Austria 0-2 Japan, New Zealand 1-3 Ghana

Group F: Netherlands 0-2 North Korea, Argentina 1-0 Costa Rica

Japan won the group decider with Austria, Maya Hijikata scoring late in each half to secure a third straight win in Colombia.

Ghana gained their first points before departing, with a 3-1 victory over New Zealand. All the goals came in the last half hour or so, Salamatu Abdulai scoring either side of Manaia Elliott’s reply and Tracey Twum with a late third.

North Korea beat the Netherlands 2-0 in a meeting on Group F’s top two, to finish on maximum points and five ahead of the Dutch. Choe Il-son broke the deadlock in first-half added time and Jong Kum doubled the advantage.

Argentina edged Costa Rica 1-0 with a Kishi Núñez 18th-minute goal, their first win enough to see them progress as one of the best third-placed sides.

Canada, Cameroon and South Korea were the other three teams to finish third but go through to the knockout stages.

Night of Wednesday 11 September – Brazil v Cameroon (8.30pm), Spain v Canada (8.30pm), Mexico v USA (2am), Colombia v South Korea (2am)

Night of Thursday 12 September – Germany v Argentina (8.30pm), North Korea v Austria (8.30pm), Japan v Nigeria (2am), France v Netherlands (2am)
