Sunderland stayed six points clear at the top on the Northern Premier with an unconfirmed Bridget Galloway hat-trick in what was a difficult evening for Middlesbrough, who lost Emma Foster, Leonie Hutchinson and Olivia Watt to injuries.
A Keira Ramshaw ball into the box led to a goal-line scramble which was seemingly finished off by Galloway, before she doubled the lead on the break and then made it 3-0 just before half time.
Emily Scarr replied soon after the restart but Ramshaw – in her 200th appearance – blasted home for 4-1, with late goals added as Georgia Gibson struck from distance and then threaded the ball through for Katie Barker to score.
Derby County did what they could on the night to keep up the pace, taking the points 2-0 at Loughborough Foxes. Sophie Domingo set up Jodie Michalska for a first-minute goal but the Rams had to wait until the 70th minute for their second, when Megan Tinsley was the provider and Hannah Keryakoplis the scorer.
Birmingham & West Midlands stayed second in Division 1 Midlands, goal-difference ahead of Bedworth United following a remarkable 4-4 draw.
