Kent Football United were moments away from their first ever point in the FA Women’s National League but lost out to AFC Basildon in a seven-goal thriller.

KFU had lost all seven games to date since their promotion to the FA WNL as London & South East League champions, while their visitors from Essex were on a four-game winning run.

Despite this the side based at Glentworth Sports Club took a 2-0 lead in front of 117 fans before the advantage was wiped out by half-time in the Wednesday evening fixture.

The hosts did restore the lead 4 minutes into the second period – Lydia Wills (2) and Emma Squirrell were their scorers on the night – only for Maddie Thomas to equalise 12 minutes from the end.

Then with seconds to go, Kelly Wealthall got her second goal of the game to give mid-table Basildon a dramatic winner.

The match was Kent Football United manager Sam MacNeil’s 100th game in charge and although the breakthrough point did not quite come on this landmark occassion, he has so far overseen 75 wins in a four-year spell with the team.
