The FA has appointed Gavin Step as the new England women’s technical director with immediate effect.
Step took up the interim role in May this year and has now earned a permanent job with the Lionesses.
Gavin Step appointed England technical director
In his position, Step will lead the Lionesses technical strategy going forward.
The director will be in charge of player development, young player pathways and performance support for the England team on a whole.
Speaking after the announcement, Step said: “My overriding emotion is one of pride, and I am very honoured to be given this role at such an exciting time.
“I also feel a responsibility in holding this position in the women’s game, and I am determined to help the team build on everything that has been achieved in the past few years. There is such a good group of people at St. George’s Park, and a strong commitment to the women’s game across the organisation.”
While he is fairly new to the role, Step has plenty of experience with England already.
The technical director had the same role for England’s youth teams before stepping up to the senior team in 2025.
What next for England women?
The Lionesses concluded their successful year on Tuesday night with an easy win against Ghana.
Goals from Lucia Kendall and Alessia Russo capped off a sensational 2025 which saw the team win a second consecutive European Championship.
Despite the great year, Sarina Wiegman has made it clear that there is more to come from her squad in the next few years.
There are no major international tournaments next year but England will once again compete in the Nations League as they look to win the competition for a first time.
Wiegman is yet to begin talks over a new Lionesses contract but that is sure to come soon with a busy 2026 coming up.
