Today’s episode of Lionesses: Down Under connected by EE sees Jill Scott and Kyle Walker joined by Beth England to discuss preparations for the Nigeria game and her pathway to the World Cup.
BETH ENGLAND
On preparations for the Nigeria game:
“Training has been good. I think everyone is really excited for the game. We know anything can happen in this tournament, so we know that we’ll have to once again be on our A game and hopefully we get the job done.”
On expectations for the game:
“I think they will be a front footed and physical team. We’re expecting quite a transitional game. Hopefully we can settle the ball and keep the pace, but we know they’ll be a big test that’s for sure.”
On her time in Australia:
“It’s been amazing in so many ways. First I started off by seeing a kangaroo which just set the tone. It’s been an experience and I’ve loved every minute of travelling the country and exploring different parts of Australia.”
On her journey through the Sheffield United academy:
“I absolutely loved playing at Sheffield. For me, that’s where I learnt to take football more seriously. Before that it was all just a bit of fun, I started off in a boys’ team. The academy made me realise the different routes to progress. I’ve played with Millie [Bright] most of my life now in all teams. I also played with my twin sister at Sheffield, so it’s been nice to have someone playing football with me throughout my journey.”
On sharing the same journey as Millie Bright:
“It’s been nice to share my journey with a fellow northerner and it’s a nice story that we’ve been able to achieve so much together on the pitch at different teams.”
On Millie Bright’s captaincy:
“She’s not shy of saying what she thinks, and she always wants the standards high. She always wants to push for more and she’d run through a brick wall for any of us, so we know she’s always there and she’s got our back.”
On the connection with the fans:
“It’s an amazing feeling. We’re so fortunate and lucky that we’re in a position that we can inspire and make people feel happy. Whether that’s just a response on social media or a signed shirt, signed flag or signed sign. I think it’s very empowering and hopefully we can continue to do that and make the fans feel happy.”
