Liverpool went within a point of second-placed Chelsea, after Beth England bagged a second-half brace to beat Bristol City.

Reds’ goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain managed to block out the Vixens in the first half, tipping a Julie Biesmans strike onto the crossbar., denying Yana Daniels at close range and saving a Chloe Arthur effort.

The hosts nearly took the lead on 40 minutes though, one in a series of fine crosses by Jess Clarke was met by Alicia Johnson but Sophie Baggaley turned it round the post.

However, moments after the restart England broke the deadlock, converting another delivery from Clarke.

City were unable to threaten much after the interval and England made sure of the points on 65 minutes, with an impressive strike from the edge of the box.

A Katie Wilkinson header forced a point-blank save from the Hornets’ keeper Fran Kitching and Destiney Toussaint had an effort ruled out for offside, before Wilkinson fired the Bees into a 38th-minute lead when a free-kick fell for her.

Toussaint was denied by the post before supplying the cross from which Paula Howells doubled the advantage just after the hour mark.

Toussaint did finally score herself from close range from an Emma Beckett ball, with Adekite Fatuga-Dada later setting up Anneka Nuttall for a consolation goal.
