Badshot Lea won the Thames Valley Counties Women’s League Division 1 title on Sunday but only 1-0 over ten-player strugglers Mortimer.

For the Surrey village side, it was ‘the biggest matchday in the team and the club’s history’, as around 100 fans gathered hoping to see the championship secured.

The visitors from Berkshire arrived bottom of the table but put up plenty of resistance. They had Jasmine Meichle sent off and Nicola Moore converted the late penalty which sealed the title with four games to spare.

Badshot’s twelfth straight win put them out of reach of both second-placed Long Crendon and Carterton in third, with the double a possibility as they host Caversham United in the League Cup quarter-finals on 27 February.

Entering the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, they earlier bowed out 1-0 at London & South East Regional League Division 1 South leaders, AFC Acorns.
