The Irish FA (FAI) has confirmed that Alan Mahon will resign from his role as assistant coach of the Ireland national team with immediate effect.
Alan Mahon resigns from national team
After just ten games with the national team Alan Mahon has announced his resignation from the Republic of Ireland.
Mahon was hired in January to support Carla Ward who was also appointed as manager at the beginning of 2025.
Ward thanked her assistant for helping transform the team in the past year: “Alan was a pleasure to work with and on behalf of everyone connected with the Ireland Women’s National Team I’d like to acknowledge and thank him for the important work that he did in helping us to secure promotion to League A in the UEFA Nations League.”
Ireland won six of their ten games during Mahon’s time with the team. The nation rounded off their impressive year with a 3-2 win over Hungary last week.
Alan Mahon explains resignation
Mahon made the decision to resign from his post due to personal reasons.
“I’m a really proud Irishman and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to represent my country as a player and as a coach,” he said. “It has been an amazing experience being involved with the Ireland Women’s National Team with memories and friendships forged that I will hold dearly for the rest of my life.
“I’d like to thank Carla (Ward) and the FAI for giving me the opportunity to take on the role, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, I owe a debt of gratitude to all of the players and staff who were brilliant to work with.

“I’ve taken the difficult decision to step down from my role with the team due to personal reasons and would like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck. I’ve no doubt that this squad has the potential to achieve World Cup qualification and I will be cheering them on in every game.”
It seems likely that Mahon will now take a break from management to deal with his own private issues.
Ireland will begin their search for a new assistant ahead of the new year. The nation is next in action for World Cup qualifiers in March 2026.
