England were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, Olga Carmona’s first-half goal deciding it.
Lauren Hemp hit the crossbar and shortly afterwards Alba Redondo was denied by Mary Earps, Salma Paralluelo having missed the ball close to goal in the centre.
When England lost possession close to the half-hour mark, Spain got in down the left and Olga Carmona’s clinical strike beat Earps inside her far post.
Paralluelo then clipped the outside of the post with the last kick off the first half.
Earps had to turn a 20-yard Mariona Caldentey shot round the post early in the second half, Chloe Kelly put over a dangerous cross at the other end but Hemp couldn’t find the finish.
Aitana Bonmati just cleared the bar from outside the box, before Keira Walsh was punished for a handball in the box but the penalty was saved by Earps.
Cata Coll tipped over an angled Lauren James shot, Jess Carter prevented Hermoso sealing it with a late second.
A minimum of 13 minutes added time were decided upon, but Earps was soon having to save from Ona Batlle.
The Lionesses did not make best use of the stoppage-time and Coll caught a last-gasp corner under pressure.
