England conceded the lead in losing 2-1 to Finland at the UEFA Women’s U-17 Championship 3rd place play-off in Lithuania, while Spain beat Germany in the final.
The Finns – alongside finalists Germany and Spain – will now represent UEFA at the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup in Uruguay later this year.
Jessica Park put the young Lionesses one up after a dozen minutes but Annika Huhta levelled six minutes into the second half and Jenni Kantanen scored the decisive goal just after the hour mark.
Park went closest to equalising for England but her free kick hit the crossbar and Finland eventually cleared.
Eva Navarro netted two second half goals as Spain became champions with a 2-0 victory over Germany.
Germany had beaten Spain in the previous two finals, while for the Spanish this was their fourth title.
Although Shakiera Martinez was unable to score for Germany today, her nine goals at the tournament equals the record for a UEFA finals, which is jointly held by Michel Platini at EURO ’84 and Elena Danilova at 2005 Women’s U-19 EURO.
England Ladies U17 U16 U15 do not seem to be too good. Perhaps selection is wrong and that England coaches should view girls in playing in leagues on cold wet windy days , and see whom has fight ,heart ,skill instead of silly regional camps etc. Not always best players picked lot of favouritism exists.
