#FIFAWWC Qualifying Round-Up: Germany top, Russia gain ground

World Cup qualifiers on Saturday and Monday featured Germany taking back their group leadership from Iceland, while Russia were gaining ground on Wales and England.

Germany regained the Group 5 leadership with a 4-0 win over Czech Republic on Saturday, with Lea Schüller notably scoring all four goals.

Russia went within three points of second-placed England on Monday, with a 3-0 Group 1 victory in Kazakhstan. Elena Danilova broke the deadlock just before the hour mark and Nadezhda Smirnova added a swift second, before doubling her tally in the last minute.

Denmark replaced Ukraine in Group 4’s second spot as the Danes defeated their visitors with a Sanne Troelsgaard effort.

Hungary are off the bottom of the same group after a 3-1 win in Croatia. Fanni Vágó scored twice and Zsanett Jakabfi the other, before Sandra Žigić got a stoppage-time consolation.

Tuesday’s matches include England away in Bosnia and Herzegovina (live on BBC Red Button at 3pm), Scotland versus Poland at St Mirren FC, Northern Ireland home to Norway in Portadown and Republic of Ireland taking on Euro champions Netherlands at Tallaght Stadium.
