Top marks for Glasgow Girls’ Lauren Evans as she scoops Scottish Building Society SWPL Player of the Month, writes Robert Wilson.

Lauren Evans has been voted as the overwhelming winner of the Scottish Building Society SWPL Player of the Month for April 2018. Over 1,600 votes were cast with Lauren getting nearly 36% of the vote.

It was a fantastic month for the Glasgow Girls player, scoring in all three games they played. That included a 4-0 win over St Johnstone and a 3-2 win over Central Girls, where Lauren scored twice including the winning goal. Those results helped lift the team from bottom and they now sit third in the Scottish Building Society SWPL 2.

Speaking from Deans Community High School, West Lothian, she said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award. We had a difficult start to the season but as a team we’ve really turned the corner and I’m glad my efforts have helped achieve that. Helping Glasgow Girls is always my aim but it’s a great feeling to be recognised in this way.

“We had a poor start to the season but we’re now on an amazing run. We’re a point behind second, so we want to keep winning games and hopefully run Motherwell as close as possible at the top.”

It has also been a fantastic month for Lauren personally, who now has a full-time contract as a Physical Education Teacher at Deans Community High School.

“It’s been an amazing time for me. I’ve just completed my one year probation and now I’m a full-time PE teacher here” she said. “I love my job. People always imagine it being a really difficult job and it has its challenges, but it’s so rewarding.

“They (the pupils) are aware that I’m a footballer and they were delighted for me when they heard about the award. Balancing my job as a teacher, my playing career, and my personal life, is tricky at times, so it’s really pleasing to have my hard work rewarded.”

Jackie Simpson, Mortgage Operations Manager for Scottish Building Society, said: “A huge well done to Lauren and Glasgow Girls. She is a very deserving winner of this award.

“Having spoken to Lauren today, it’s really incredible the hard work that she and most other Scottish Building Society SWPL players are putting in. Balancing full time jobs and training four or three times a week is a huge commitment and shows the passion that there is for the game.”

Also nominated for the April award was Suzanne Mulvey (Motherwell), Jade Gallon (Rangers), and Pamela Liddell (Hearts).
