Women’s Regional League Round-Up: Four cup shocks for one division

Three of the top four teams in the Greater London League suffered cup shocks, Sport London Benfica spanned three divisions in winning away from home.

EASTERN – St Ives hold Harlow

PREMIER – St Ives Town were only the second side to deny leaders Harlow Town victory in a 2-2 tie, allowing Peterborough Northern Star to gain some ground it a 3-0 defeat of Royston Town in which Leah Cudone struck twice. Luton Town’s 4-1 result over Colney Heath was matched by Bedford at Haringey Borough.

1 NORTH – Kings Lynn Town were 2-1 winners at AFC Sudbury and Needham Market leapfrogged Newmarket Town into third when beating them 4-2 away.

1 SOUTH – Leigh Ramblers went level on points with leaders Millwall Lionesses with a 2-1 victory at Stevenage Development, Wodson Park’s Kristina O’Connell got four goals in the 5-1 defeat of Lawford.

EAST MIDLANDS – Oadby put five past leaders

PREMIER – Northampton Town needed a Francesca Partridge leveller to rescue a point against Loughborough Students, Ollerton Town’s Shoniqua Barnes bagged a brace as Leicester City LFC suffered a 3-0 reverse.

1 NORTH – Hykeham Town made it eight wins in a row 6-1 over Arnold Eagles with a Lauren Churcher hat-trick, Grimsby Borough beat Arnold Town 3-1 and Notts County Development netted eight against Sleaford Town

1 SOUTH – Oadby & Wigston sent leaders Beaumont Park to a 5-0 defeat, Ilkeston Town’s Millie Huckle scored the game’s only goal at Lutterworth Athletic and Loughborough Foxes Vixens beat Derby County Community 2-0.

LONDON & SOUTH EAST – Rangers return to pole position

QPR were restricted to a 2-0 victory by lowly Aylesford but it took them back to the top of the table. Eastbourne Town edged hosts Denham United with a Danielle Parfitt goal, Whyteleafe shared four goals with Saltdean United.

GREATER LONDON JOHN GREENACRE MEMORIAL TROPHY 2ND RD – Four Premier sides were eliminated from the Cup by lower division teams, while top-of-the-league New London Lionesses only edged Division 2 South leaders Bromley on penalties and Watford Development came through 1-0 at Hampton & Richmond Borough, likewise Clapham United against Clapton. Brentford hit Spurs 3rds 6-1 with a Rebekah Wiltshire treble, Islington Borough overcame Leyton Orient Development 3-1 and there were 1-0 away wins for Walton Casuals at Sutton United and Division 3 West side Sport London Benfica with a Hope Taylor effort at Hackney.

SOUTH EAST COUNTIES PREMIER – Crawley Wasps DS clinched a first win 3-0 in the basement battle with Eastbourne United.

NORTH EAST – York RI earn narrow lead

PREMIER – Harrogate Town extended their lead when winning 5-1 at South Shields, Farsley Celtic forced their way into second after a 3-1 success at Ossett United and Redcar Town’s Jessica Round got both their goals in a 2-2 tie with Wallsend BC.

1 NORTH – Sunderland West End now have maximum points from 11 games following a 5-1 beating of Blyth Town that featured an Allison Ferris treble, Alnwick Town put ten past Prudhoe Town to extend tier on 100% form. Boro Rangers’ Alys Beadle bagged tree goals in a 3-1 in at Norton & Stockton Ancients Reserves that saw them jump three places to third, while Washington enjoyed a good 1-0 result over Lumley from a Courtney-Paige Cain effort.

1 SOUTH – York RI now lead on goal-difference from Sheffield Wednesday and Altofts having hit ten at Harrogate Railway. The Owls beat Bradford Park Avenue 8-0 and Altofts on 3-1 at Wakefield Trinity.

NORTH WEST – Ten in a row for Blackburn CSC

PREMIER – Crewe Alexandra sent Morecambe to a 3-1 defeat and Mossley Hill Athletic shared six goals with Wigan Athletic.

1 NORTH – It’s ten wins in a row for Blackburn CSC with a 6-1 result at Morecambe Reserves, while Blackpool cruised home 13-0 against Carlisle United.

1 SOUTH – Fourth-placed Chester were held 1-1 at home by West Kirby in fifth.

SOUTHERN – Abingdon sides lead both tables

PREMIER – Abingdon United jumped from third to first with a 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford City picked up a 4-1 result at Newbury and last-placed Warsash Wasps drew 2-2 with Ascot United.

ONE – Abingdon Town opened up an eight-point lead after winning the top-two clash with Abbey Rangers 3-1, Tilehurst Panthers pipped Alton 4-3 with Lauryn Abery on target twice, while Wycombe Wanderers Development drew 1-1 with Southampton Women’s Reserves.

LEAGUE CUP Q-F – Division 1 side Eastleigh took Winchester City Flyers to penalties with the scores deadlocked at 1-1 before bowing out 4-3 on spot-kicks.

1 NORTHERN – Cheltenham Town Development hit Downend Flyers for six to return to top spot.

1 WESTERN – Feniton’s Stefanie Churchill-Matthews scored three in a 7-1 result at Alphington to send them level on points with leaders Plymouth Argyle Reserves

PAT SOWDEN CUP Q-Fs – Wootton Bassett Town progressed past Middlezoy Rovers, Lisa Coe and substitute Libby Davies with a decisive double seconds apart for a 3-2 outcome.

BRISTOL SOCCERWORLD CUP Q-Fs – Sherborne Town made the semis with a single Jemma Tewkesbury goal against Forest Green Rovers and will next face Plympton, who were 7-3 winners at Swindon Spitfires with a Samantha Metters treble. Weston Mendip also netted seven on the road, hosts Weston Super Mare replying twice.

WEST MIDLANDS – Sutton’s Deasy nets double hat-trick

PREMIER – Sutton Coldfield Town netted ten against Lye Town as Niamh Deasy found the target six times, Coventry Sphinx got as many versus Knowle with three for Ashleigh Simms, Leek Town turned a 1-0 interval advantage into an 8-0 scoreline against Coundon Court with five for Chantelle Gallagher and leaders Redditch United defeated Stockingford AA Pavilion 6-2.

1 NORTH – There were four goals for AFC Telford United against Solihull Sporting, as many for Shifnal Town with one back by Port Vale, Rachel Green grabbed all Sandwell’s goals as Sutton Coldfield Town Royals lost 4-2 and Stoke City Development defeated Wyrley 2-1.

1 SOUTH – Stourbridge’s 5-0 result with Rugby Town was their 13th win on the spin, Kidderminster Harriers and Cookley Sports remain way off the pace but with games in hand after 4-0 wins at Droitwich Spa and home to Leamington Lions respectively. Sedgley & Gornal United were sunk 13-0 at home by Kingfisher whose Elloise Russell achieved a four-goal haul.
