Wales Women played out a goalless draw at the Pinatar Cup with an Iceland side who are 16 places higher in the world rankings.

Jess Fishlock dispossessed Karolina Vilhjalmsdottir early on and found Rachel Rowe, but her effort sailed over the crossbar.

Laura O’Sullivan had to scramble back to clear the ball off the line after missing Hayley Ladd’s backpass.

Ceri Holland shot over the top, while moments later Sveindis Jonsdottir got through on goal but Gemma Evans made a crucial block in what was her 50th cap.

Rowe met Angharad James’ cutback but shot straight at goalkeeper Celia Rundarsdottir and after the break, Kayleigh Green played in Holland who curled an effort over the bar.

Jonsdottir nearly broke the deadlock with four minutes left, unmarked from a corner she failed to make a telling connection.

Wales are goal-difference behind leaders Iceland ahead of their final fixture against Scotland on Tuesday.
