Wales U-19s defeated by Denmark

Wales went down to a 2-0 loss against Denmark in their opening UEFA U-19 Elite Round group match in Portugal this afternoon.

Chloe Chivers fired over the bar from a free-kick outside of the box, while at the other end Emma Gibbon made a smart reaction save to deny the Danes.

However, Signe Holt Anderson did score for Denmark on 17 minutes, from inside the area after a short corner.

Andersen had the ball in the net minutes later but it was ruled out for offside.

Wales fought for an equaliser but goalkeeper Lene Christensen blocked another Chivers set-piece and also a Tamsyn Sibanda strike.

Amina Vine was just off target following Lily Woodham’s free-kick, before substitute Cecilie Johansen scored to confirm Denmark’s victory with 15 minutes remaining.

Wales play their second group match on Thursday, against Serbia (3pm local time) in Coimbra. The Serbians began be beating the hosts 1-0, Miljana Ivanović the scorer.

Wales U-19s: Gibson, Powell, Lake (Pike, 62), Davies (C), Jenkins, Ritchie, Vine, Thomas, Chivers (Horrell, 76), Woodham (Jones, 83), Sibanda.

Unused Substitutes: Clark, Carpinini, Poole, Dukes.
