The Vatican has had a men’s football team for nearly 50 years and later this month they will field a women’s side for the first time.
The squad is made up of Vatican staff and their relatives, with their first friendly on 26 May set to be quite a test, against AS Roma – fourth-placed finishers in Serie A.
Susan Volpini, secretary of the Women in the Vatican Association will manage the side, who have been lined up for an international tournament in Vienna next month.
