England were close to bowing out of UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 at the quarter-final stage but levelled late on before beating Spain in extra time.

Spain had broken the deadlock before the hour mark, Esther Gonzalez taking advantage of a defensive lapse to drive a low shot past Mary Earps.

It wasn’t until six minutes from full time that the Lionesses got level, to the relief of the near 3,000 crowd at the Amex Stadium.

Substitute Ella Toone volleyed home at close-range from Alessia Russo’s ‘s knockdown to force the extra half hour.
