Scottish Women’s Football (SWF) have announced an opening Scottish Building Society SWPL 1 fixture is to be broadcast on BBC ALBA.
The Friday evening match (21 February) will see Celtic host Glasgow City for a 7.30pm kick-off at K-Park. The last time the two sides met, Celtic came away 4-1 winners to inflict the only league defeat on City in the 2019 season.
Since last year, there has been large scale changes at Celtic. They are under new management in the form of Head Coach, Fran Alonso. The Spaniard, formerly Ronald Koeman’s assistant at Everton and a technical coach at Southampton under Mauricio Pochettino, arrived from Lewes FC.
Celtic also announced last month that they were going professional with immediate effect. They signed five current players on professional contracts before adding a further four players to their squad.
Two of those players, Lisa Robertson and Jodie Bartle, arrive from the FA WC, while Celtic also signed American’s Summer Green and Sarah Teegarden.
In contrast, the away side have made no current changes to their double winning squad. Glasgow City did however bolster their squad most recently last summer with the signing of Scotland International, Rachel McLauchlan, and Eilish McSorley returning for her third spell at the club.
SWF Executive Officer, Fiona McIntyre, said: “We are delighted to have an opening weekend fixture live on BBC ALBA. When the matches were announced, Celtic v Glasgow City was the stand-out fixture. Given this exciting news, we’re sure there will be a lot of interest in this match and the Scottish Women’s Premier League in general.”
Speaking about the season ahead, Fiona added: “It’s an extremely exciting time for the Scottish game. The changes we’ve made to our competition structure at senior level are significant and we strongly believe will be hugely beneficial to the game an all involved. I am confident we will see an incredibly competitive and exciting season across both SWPL 1 and SWPL 2 and we are delighted to kick off the season with this showcase match.”
