Sunderland AFC Women have signed 19-year-old Wales international forward Mary McAteer on a one-year professional contract.

Capable of playing anywhere along the forward line, McAteer played 15 times in all competitions for Coventry United (now Rugby Borough), scoring three goals and assisting five more.

A Wales youth international, McAteer will be meeting up with Wales’ senior squad for her first-team call-up when they take on USA in a friendly in California.

McAteer told safc.com: “I’m buzzing. I’ve been looking forward to this move ever since I agreed it with Mel [Reay]. I’m really excited to get started, stay in the championship and I’m ready to push on.”

Head Coach Mel Reay said: “Mary is an exciting young player who has a lot of potential. She is a ball -carrying forward and can play anywhere across the front line. We are looking forward to getting on the grass and working with her once she returns from international duty.”
