Sheffield United Women sign Courtney Sweetman-Kirk

Sheffield United's new signing, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk

Sheffield United Women have signed striker Courtney Sweetman-Kirk after a two-year spell at Liverpool.

The 29-year-old reunites with head coach Neil Redfearn who took her to Liverpool in 2018 from local rivals Everton.

Sweetman-Kirk began her senior career at Lincoln City in the FA Women’s Super League in 2013, before dropping down a level in 2014 with Doncaster Rovers Belles.

Over the next two seasons, the striker scored 30 goals, including 20 in the team’s promotion-winning season in 2015, seven clear of the next highest scorer in the league.

An injury-hit 2016 led her to joining Everton in 2017 before she swapped blue for red in 2018. In her first season at Liverpool, Sweetman-Kirk reached double figures for goals in the top tier of the women’s game.

Now reunited with her former head coach and several former team mates, Sweetman-Kirk can’t wait to get going ahead of a busy period for the team.

“I’m buzzing. It was something for me this time around I wanted to take my time with. I think lockdown for everyone was a time to look at themselves and I wanted to make sure the decision was right for me. I’m just glad after speaking to the club and to Redders that we managed to get it sorted. It’s about enjoying my football again.”

Head coach Neil Redfearn is also delighted to have added even more quality to an attack which has already contributed 10 goals in the team’s opening three league games.

“Courtney is a great addition to the group. She is a proven scorer and vastly experienced at Championship level and gives us options all across the front line with her versatility and creativity.

“We’re really pleased to get Courts in as I’m sure she will prove to be a valuable asset to a quality group.”
