The Republic of Ireland won 2-1 away to Finland in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Group game at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.

Megan Connolly’s curling free-kick gave the visitors a great start and the lead after only nine minutes.

Linda Sällström and Anna Westerlund went close for the Finns before they took advantage of Katie McCabe being off the pitch with an injury, when Adelina Engman levelled from close range.

Just four minutes later the lead was restored, Heather Payne’s cross was spilled by Tinja-Riikka Korpela and Denise O’Sullivan was on hand to head home.

McCabe struck an effort just wide and although Finland piled on the pressure in the final minutes, the home defence held out to secure their first points in the group.
