Pia Sundhage has replaced Vadao as the head coach of Brazil following the nations Round of 16 exit at the World Cup earlier this month.
Sundhage is initially on a two-year contract, which could be extended for a similar spell to cover the 2023 World Cup.
She told the Swedish FA’s website: “Brazil is a fantastic football country, full of talented players whom I look forward to getting to know and work with.
“The national team is in an exciting phase right now – you need, at least to some extent, a change of generation, while you have qualified for the Olympics next year.”
While the Swedish coach has won Olympic gold twice with the USA, plus silver for Sweden as well as leading her homeland to become World Cup runners-up, she is the first person from outside of Brazil to manage their national team.
