Newcastle United and Portsmouth go top in FA Women’s National League

Newcastle United and Portsmouth went top in the FA Women’s National League Northern and Southern Premier Divisions respectively.

NORTHERN PREMIER DIVISION

Newcastle United 1-0 West Bromwich Albion (Att: 1,527)
Stoke City 1-5 Nottingham Forest

In a weather-hit programme, Newcastle United knocked Burnley off the top of the table with a narrow win over West Brom, as Becky Ferguson scored on 85  minutes. Nottingham Forest climbed to third spot, they had been pegged back by a penalty but Holly Manders restored the lead from the spot for the first of her brace at the Bet365 Stadium.

SOUTHERN PREMIER DIVISION

Billericay Town 2-2 Ipswich Town (Att: 303)
Hashtag United 0-1 Cheltenham Town (Att: 98)
London Bees 0-4 Portsmouth
Rugby Borough 2-1 Chatham Town

Jazmin Younger and Emma Jones gave Portsmouth a 2-0 interval lead at London Bees, substitutes Ella Humphrey and Danielle Lane adding late goals as they went top on goal-difference, Cheltenham Town having pulled off a fine win at Hashtag United with Lucy Copsey’s late effort. Billericay Town shared the points with third-placed Ipswich Town, a Nicky Potts double saw Rugby Borough edge Chatham Town 2-1 to rise to fourth position.

DIVISION 1 MIDLANDS

Sutton Coldfield Town 0-2 Boldmere St Michaels (Att: 101)

Boldmere jumped three places to third following their victory at Sutton Coldfield, Jess Wallace and Evie Billingsley with a goal apiece.

DIVISION 1 NORTH

Hull City 6-0 FC United of Manchester (Att: 1,017)
Stockport County 3-1 Norton & Stockton Ancients (Att: 76)

Hull City hit FC United for six in front of over 1,000 at Craven Park, taking over the leadership from Barnsley WFC on goal-difference. Stockport County’s defeat of Norton was aided by an Olivia Greenhalgh double and lifted them to fourth, while the visitors had a player red-carded after the final whistle.

DIVISION 1 SOUTH EAST

Ashford Town 1-2 Queens Park Rangers (Att: 82)
Norwich City 2-0 AFC Wimbledon (Att: 320)

Norwich City cut AFC Wimbledon’s lead to three points with a game in hand, after the Canaries defeated the Dons with two goals from Natasha Snelling, QPR came from behind to win at Ashford with a second-half Grace Stanley brace, which kept them within three points of Norwich.

DIVISION 1 SOUTH WEST

Swindon Town 4-0 Torquay United (Att: 62)

Third-placed Swindon Town overcame Torquay with a couple of goals each for Annie Colston and Ellie Strippel, as the Gulls stay goal-difference above the drop zone.

ADOBE WOMEN’S FA CUP 2ND ROUND 

Southampton Women’s 3-0 Maidenhead United (Att:60)
Bristol Rovers 1-2 Keynsham Town

Southampton Women’s beat Maidenhead United with goals by Chloe Ball, Ellie Chaffe and Shannon Sievwright to set up a home tie against Championship side Watford next week. Keynsham Town came through 2-1 at South West League leaders Bristol Rovers to book a trip to Eastern League side Luton Town.

Canada Women thrash Australia, USA defeat China
