New Women’s Football Journalist Award Announced

The Sports Journalists’ Association have announced a major new partnership with UEFA to promote football writing in Britain.

The UEFA Together#WePlayStrong Football Journalist of the Year Award is open to all journalists specialising in football. The award is named after UEFA’s European-wide campaign to inspire more girls to take up and continue to play football.

Janine Self, co-chair of the SJA, welcomed UEFA involvement in the British Sports Journalism Awards: “We are delighted UEFA have chosen to link an award for football writing to the women’s game and we hope it encourages journalists to enter articles on both men’s and women’s football.

“Sports writing can play a key role in transforming the perception of women’s football and in a year which has seen some outstanding performances by women’s teams, I look forward to seeing reports on these matches entered in the competition.”

“We are partnering with this award because we would like to raise awareness about our activities in women’s football,” said UEFA’s Head of Marketing Activities and Sponsorships Peter Willems. “We feel that it is important to promote grassroots football and the fact that this sport is cool and should be played by everyone.”

The UEFA Together#WePlayStrong Football Journalist of the Year is part of the British Sports Journalism Awards, sponsored by The National Lottery.  This prestigious national competition is open to all British-based sports writers, broadcasters and photographers and has been running for forty years.

We encourage you to enter or to cajole writers you appreciate and admire, to put forward their work for consideration.

Entry forms for the 2017 awards are now available and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Westminster Park Plaza on Monday 26 February 2018. For further information, contact James Green on 020 8916 2493 or email SJA@s2fevents.co.uk
