Mary Earps has revealed that she hopes to one day reconcile with England head coach Sarina Wiegman despite the pair having a “difference of opinion”.

The former England No.1 has stolen the headlines over the last week, thanks to her comments on her successor, Hannah Hampton and Wiegman in her autobiography ‘All In’.

In her book, Earps said Wiegman rewarded ‘bad behaviour’ by reintegrating Hampton into the Lionesses squad in 2023.

About Hampton, Earps wrote: “Her behaviour behind the scenes at the Euros (Euro 2022) had frequently risked derailing training sessions and team resources.”

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper has since defended her comments, saying the autobiography is “not about heroes and villains”.

What has Mary Earps said about Sarina Wiegman?

In an interview with Sky Sports, Mary Earps said she wishes to one day reconcile with Sarina Wiegman, despite their differences.

She said: “‘I think that hopefully we will have a conversation in the future, and after everything settles down, we can just draw a line under everything.

“But when we last spoke, I saw her at the Ballon d’Or, and at St George’s Park, we both acknowledged that you know we had a difference of opinion and a difference of perspective on certain things.

“We weren’t quite seeing things the same way, but that doesn’t take away from the memories we’ve shared and the respect that’s there certainly from my side.”

Earps achieved great success under Wiegman, helping England win their first European Championship at Euro 2022.

She retired from England duty just before Euro 2025, after being told by Wiegman that Hampton would be No.1 at the tournament in Switzerland.

Hampton would go on to inspire England to glory at Euro 2025, with two penalty shootout saves in the final against Spain.

What has been said about the comments in Mary Earps’ autobiography?

The comments from Mary Earps about Hannah Hampton and Sarina Wiegman in her autobiography have been a huge talking point in the world of women’s football over the last week.

Ellen White said she was uneasy with the comments by Earps in her autobiography, ‘All In’.

Fara Williams, in her TNT Sports column, said that Earps needed to be clearer over her “baffling” comments.

She felt Earps should have provided more explanation to avoid confusion, adding, “If Mary is going to be open and honest about the situation, she needs to go into more detail about the supposed bad behaviour rather than leave it up in the air.”

Hampton’s former teammate, Ruesha Littlejohn admitted the Chelsea goalkeeper could be “difficult” and a “pain in the a***” at times.

The Republic of Ireland international praised Hampton’s ability as a goalkeeper and also defended the timing of Earps’ autobiography.

Elsewhere, Chelsea captain Millie Bright received backlash for not speaking on the saga.
