Lucia Kendall reflects on ‘special moment’ after scoring first goal for the Lionesses

Lucia Kendall netted her first England goal on Tuesday night in what was a special moment for the Southampton-born midfielder.

Kendall grew up on the South coast so scoring at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium was all the more emotional.

Lucia Kendall reflects on special first goal

After earning her first call-up for the Lionesses in October, things have moved fast for Aston Villa’s Lucia Kendall.

The 21-year-old made her debut for England in a friendly against Australia last month.

In the next international break Kendall was picked again and this time she had her big moment.

Against Ghana on Tuesday night the young midfielder shone, reacting quickest in the box to net her first goal for the Lionesses.

Speaking after the game, Kendall reflected on the special moment: “[It is] A really special moment for me to be able to do it here, where I grew up. This place made me into the player I am,” Kendall said.

“It felt like it was written [in the stars]. It was so special. I got overwhelmed with emotion really.”

Sarina Wiegman celebrates Kendall’s success

Kendall’s goal was the first in a 2-0 win for England that rounded off a near-perfect year for the nation.

Sarina Wiegman was just as happy as Kendall with her first goal and she celebrated the impressive performance after the game.

“She celebrated as if she had won the Champions League,” said the England manager. “They are still doing some treatment on the grass!”

After being named player of the mach against Australia, Wiegman said Kendall ‘deserved a start‘ against Ghana.

“She shows consistency and that’s not easy when you just come into a new environment and into the WSL with Aston Villa,” admitted Wiegman.

“Things have gone so quickly so fast, but she just keeps up her levels and shows she is a good player – and that is impressive.”

Kendall has now thrown her name into the hat for future selections and it may be hard for Wiegman to leave her out of the squad next year.
