Late Marta penalty denies Dutch victory

Marta nets late penalty leveller for Brazil against the Netherlands in the Tournoi de France, Portugal defeat Norway at the Algarve Cup.

France were ahead against Finland courtesy of an own-goal by Anna Westerlund, Melvine Malard and Wendie Renard taking the lead to 3-0 by half-time. Grace Geyoro got the fourth and Renard scored her second of the night in the penultimate minute.

Brazil’s Ary Borges twice hit the woodwork in the first half but it was the Netherlands who scored first, Lineth Beerensteyn finding the net just after the hour mark. Substitute Marta equalised from the penalty spot with three minutes to go following handball by Merel van Dongen, who was then sent off in added time for a second caution.

Saturday’s ties see the Finns and Dutch clash at 5pm, France face Brazil at 8.10pm UK time.

Barbara Bonansea got the only goal five minutes into the second half, to give Italy victory over Denmark.

Tatiana Pinto had Portugal ahead against Norway midway through the first half, the points sealed when Carolina Mendes doubled the advantage deep into added time.

Next up is Sweden’s first game of the tournament against Denmark on Friday at 5.05pm UK time.
