Republic of Ireland took the lead against Germany at the UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship but ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.

Goalkeeper Katie Keane twice did well to deny Estrella Gonzalez, before Ireland took the lead against the run of play just after the half-hour mark.

Meabh Russell put in a cross to the far post, met on the volley by Lia O’Leary and the ball squirming past Anne Moll at her near post.

Tessa Blumenberg hit the post from distance, fellow substitute Leonie Schetter then coming off the bench and swiftly equalising with 20 minutes to play.

Germany were ahead seven minutes later, Blumenberg’s wicked ball into the box stabbed home by another sub in Laila Portella.

Ireland’s last chance came from a free kick and some head tennis in the penalty area but Germany were eventually able to clear.
