Heckler brace beats Blackburn
A combination of County Cup commitments and the rain left FA WPL fixtures rather thin on the ground, although that included a big match between two Northern Division title hopefuls.
Blackburn Rovers were left ruing missed chances including a penalty, as Huddersfield Town went away 2-0 winners.
Just 2 minutes in and Terriers’ keeper Laura Carter made two point-blank saves and then midway through the half, Amelia Turner cleared Saffron Jordan’s header off the line. The approaching the interval. Kate Mallin crossed from the byline and Emily Heckler powered a header into the net.
Ten minutes after the restart, the visitors’ Vicky Abbott was sent off for bringing down Jordan but Lynda Shepherd’s penalty was saved.
Heckler doubled the lead on 75 minutes, with a volley from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.
Chichester and Cardiff share six goals
Chichester City came from two goals down to lead Cardiff City Ladies but ultimately head to settle for a 3-3 draw.
Cardiff struck twice in the first 17 minutes, with a Hannah Mills cross going straight in before the second goal came from Cori Williams on a breakaway.
Chichester quickly pulled one back, Alexandre’s ball forward setting up Jess Lewry to finish, before Hollie Wride’s free-kick levelled the scores 4 minutes short of half-time.
The hosts’ Cherelle Khassal won a 57th-minute penalty which Wride converted, but the Welsh side equalised 16 minutes from time through Kelly Isaacs.
Rookettes rollover Robins
Lewes had to be patient at bottom of the table Swindon Town, pegged back by the break, the Rookettes eventually went ahead and sealed the win with a third goal.
Avilla Bergin hit the Town bar in the first minute and although Sarah Kempson soon netted from 25 yards, Swindon broke away to level on 10 minutes.
Wells was denied by the crossbar and Georgia Bridges volleyed the rebound over before netting when Kempson’s shot was parried. Lisa Fulgence then lobbed home on 77 minutes for a two-goal cushion.
Saints put pressure on Foxes
TNS moved to within a point of Midlands Division 1 leaders Loughborough Foxes, following their 4-1 defeat of Rotherham United. Emily Ridge got a couple and Phoebe Davies one to put the Saints 3-0 up by the midway point, with Kimberley Bebbington later adding their fourth.
Brighouse leave it late
Brighouse Town went five points clear at the top of Northern Division 1, after a stoppage-time goal them a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chorley. All the goals were in the second half, Chorley taking the lead but Zoe Doherty replying on 65 minutes and Jodie Redgrave grabbing the winner.
Barnsley’s 3-1 result over Chester le Street Town took them above their visitors and two other teams, to sit fifth in the table. Anna Cairns, Drew Greene and Demi Pringle got the goals for the Tykes.
Crewe Alexandra also climbed three places and are now seventh, thanks to an impressive 4-2 win at Morecambe. Amanda Fallon’s flick on forced an early own-goal by the home side and Laura Garner’s free-kick had the Alex 2-0 up in only 7 minutes. That lead was wiped out by Morecambe but a long-range set-piece from Garner restored the advantage on half-time. Michelle Saunders marked her debut by rounding off the scoring 10 minutes from the end.
Byron delivers for Hatters
Luton Town fought back to win by the odd goal in five at Actonians and go fifth in South East Division 1. Carla Williams had the West London side in front but Dionne Manning turned in Erica Byron’s corner. Another Byron flag-kick 7 minutes before the break led to an own-goal and via a Byron corner a Steph Gale cross saw Zara Carroll extend the Hatters’ lead, with Alessandra Barreca later halving the deficit.
Point for ten-player Poole
A 2-2 home draw for Poole Town with Maidenhead United was enough to push the Dorset side up a couple of positions to fifth in South West Division 1. Faye Rolfe-Hawkins scored in the 1st minute and Jemma Tewkesbury also found the net for Poole, whose Samantha Gubb received two cautions.
