Sowerby send Terriers second
Huddersfield Town went second in the Northern Division, after Lucy Sowerby’s goal on 37 minutes proved enough to beat Fylde. The Terriers still trail Middlesbrough by six points though and have played three game more.
Bradford City moved within two points of Derby County after defeating them 1-0 away from home, Laura Elford scoring 20 minutes in.
Basildon close in on leaders
C & K Basildon are just two points short of Southern table-toppers Charlton Athletic, after a 3-1 victory over Swindon Town lifted them back into second spot. The lowly visitors did take a surprise lead though, before a double strike from Angela Addison made it 2-1 on 32 minutes. Zoe Rushen made sure of the points with a third goal after the break.
Crystal Palace slipped back to third when held to a goalless draw at home by West Ham, with both teams having an effort disallowed for offside. The Eagles had Nikita Whinnett carried off early on but Cherie Rowlands should have grabbed them a late winner.
Portsmouth pushed into the top half with the only goal at QPR. who stay in the bottom two. It was 15 minutes from the end when the breakthrough arrived, Katie James’ strike winning a tight match.
Blades bang in ten
Third-placed Sheffield United thumped next to bottom Rotherham United 10-0 in Midlands Division 1, with hat-trick from Natalie Shaw and Millie Kenyon. Sophie Bell, Jodie Hartley, Tania Marsden and Amy Beanland all add one each.
Leicester City LFC are without a win but restricted fourth in the table Radcliffe Olympic to a 1-0 scoreline. It took a special goal to beat them too, an acrobatic Beth Bailey strike from a half-cleared corner.
Steel City Wanderers’ 3-2 success at Solihull Moors left them just three points short of their mid-table hosts and with four games in hand. Claire Attrill and Lucy Smith had Wanderers two up in 20 minutes and although Georgia Jones pulled one back, Moors had a player sent off before half-time. Attrill added her second and although Carly Davies got Moors back in it on 73 minutes, the points were heading to Yorkshire.
Feds keep top spot from Tigresses
Liverpool Marshalls Feds still hold a one-goal lead over Hull City at the top of Northern Division 1, after the pair shared four goals. Laura Bartup put Feds in front and Ellie Tanser equalised when pouncing on a deflected shot by Hope Knight. Rebecca Beech lobbed City ahead but Carle Lee earned the hosts a point with a leveller 12 minutes from time.
Leeds United are goal-difference away from escaping the bottom two after holding fifth-placed Crewe Alexandra 0-0.
Hatters overcome O’s
Luton Town pulled off an impressive 4-0 win away to second-placed Leyton Orient. Steph Gale got the first after Natasha Fensome’s shot came back off the post, the latter did score after the interval and Lisa Nixon netted the third. Jo Rutherford’s penalty hit the bar after Orient had a player sent off for handball on the line but Fensome then struck again.
Ipswich Town are one points short of MK Dons in third after defeating Denham United 4-2. Zoe Cossey’s cross deflected into the Denham net but Kayleigh Currivan son replied. Miagh Downey scored a good second for Town but Currivan volleyed in an even better effort from 25 yards. Downey won a penalty which Amanda Crump converted and the hosts went on to make sure of the points with a good finish from Cossey.
Eleven in a row
Southampton WFC’s 6-1 result over Larkhall Athletic was their eleventh straight win since joining the league and has put them nine points clear in South West Division 1. Jane Yeates hit a hat-trick, Emma Pinner, Cassie Thorp and Manuela Naprta got singles.
Managers of the Month
Meanwhile, in the league’s manager of the month awards for January, Coventry United’s Jay Bradford was the Northern/Southern winner and Brighouse Town’s Rob Mitchell took the honour for Division 1.
