Hibernian and Shelbourne Ladies Out Of #UWCL

Hibs held group winners Olimpia Cluj in their last UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying tie but it was not enough to go through as best runners-up, as was the case for Shelbourne despite their 3-1 defeat of Linfield.

Hibernian (pictured top) trailed for much of the game against their Romanian hosts, after Alexandra Lunca netted 5 minutes in.

Lia Tweedie came closest to scoring in the first half for Hibs, her volley coming crashing off the bar but Lucy Graham earned a point with a far post header 6 minutes from the end.

It was after the hour mark when Fiona Donnolly broke the deadlock for Shelbourne and although Megan Bell brought Linfield level, late efforts from Kate Mooney and Niamh Prior won it for the FAI WNL champions.

Swansea City were already eliminated and given a harsh send off with a 9-0 thrashing from Kharkiv. Two down in just 6 minutes, City trailed 5-0 by the break and Tetiana Polyukhovych completed her hat-trick in stoppage-time.

Also progressing from the ten qualifying round groups are; Gintra, Ajax, Apollon, Minsk, Stjarnan, BIIK, Avaldsnes, PAOK and best runners-up Zürich.

Manchester City are one of the seeded teams for Friday’s Round of 32 draw and although Chelsea are not seeded, the pair cannot be drawn together, as no club may meet a team from their own association in this round.

The UWCL Round of 32 draw will be streamed live on uefa.com from 12:30 (UK time) this Friday, 1st September.
